Guernica is a representation of human truth- our capacity for destruction, slaughter, and pain. Perhaps this critical view of humanity caused this painting by Picasso to be censored, celebrated, vilified, and everything in-between.
While Guernica comments on the tragedies and brutality of external, political conflict, “Mushrooms and Orgasms” touches on the ferocious self-destruction that internal conflict brings. Jonathan Larson wrote “the opposite of war isn’t peace, it’s creation” and it is this notion that led me to find outlets like transformative experiences and shared intimacy to address and soothe my inner conflicts.
